Technology Standardization GuidelinesWhy a Technology Standardization Policy?

Troy University's Technology Standardization Policy is directed toward the goal of achieving and maintaining hardware and software facilities that provide a high level of productivity for faculty, staff and students in a cost-effective manner.

This is a difficult goal to achieve because technology is constantly moving ahead. The purpose of these standards is to provide faculty and staff with guidance in planning technology-based projects on the Troy University campus. In addition, these standards establish a usable degree of technology compatibility across the campus. This enhances the ability to share documents and information in electronic form between different offices and departments at Troy University.

The Troy University's Technology Standards appearing in Appendix A (Software) and Appendix B (Hardware) clearly define the recommended hardware and software facilities endorsed by Troy University. Since technology is not static, this policy and the recommended software and hardware lists will be reviewed and updated a minimum of every six months.

Why are these standards being established?

Multiple projects constantly compete for Troy University's resources. Establishing standards will help Troy University plan and purchase technology equipment and software that will enhance productivity and will be usable for a reasonable period of time in the future. These standards will also help the University adhere to its strict policy banning unlicensed software.

What if I have some hardware or software not included on the Troy University Technology Standards recommended list?

Troy University will not require you to change your software and hardware if you do not want to and your supervisor or department concurs. You may find, however, that it will become difficult to communicate and share files with other offices and department across campus if you are using non-standard software or hardware.

What is the phase-in time for this Troy University Technology Standardization Policy?

The proposed Technology Standards will be phased in beginning Summer Quarter of 1998. Beginning Fall Quarter of 1998, all purchases will adhere to these standards.

Troy University recognizes that full implementation of Desktop Standards, outlined below, will take time and money. As you upgrade your systems, however, adhering to these standards will result in providing the best productivity and support for all employees.
