Daylight Saving Time Update Information

Beginning this year, Congress has extended the start and end dates for daylight-saving time (DST). As a result, DST will now begin on the second Sunday of March (March 11) and end the first Sunday of November (Nov. 4).

This forthcoming change means that TROY is implementing a wide variety of Information Technology systems updates because calendars and other time-keeping programs on computers and mobile devices could be affected by the new start and end dates. For example, calendar items may appear in incorrect time slots, mobile devices such as PDAs and Smartphones may not be properly synced with computers, and clocks on some devices may be an hour off after the DST changeover.

What if I don’t update my system?

If you choose not to take any action, and you live in the U.S. or Canada, your system clock and calendar will no longer automatically adjust for Daylight Saving Time at the proper time each year. This means that your system clock will adjust 3 weeks late in the spring and 1 week early in the fall.

Please review the information included below to learn how to update your devices and/or software. If you need further assistance you may contact the Helpdesk at: https://it.troy.edu/Staff/helpdesk_form.htm or 334-670-HELP.

Microsoft Outlook 2000, Outlook 2002, Outlook 2003

Microsoft recommends prior to installing any automatic or manual DST updates that you print out your calendar. You may also save your Outlook Calendar as a web page (by selecting “Save as a Web Page…” from the File menu) for the extended DST period (the three weeks between the new and old DST change in March and one week in November). Once you have installed the updates, be sure to double check all appointments that you have scheduled during the extended DST period to ensure they are all correct. If an appointment you have scheduled is incorrect, you may move it manually to update it.

If you use the calendar or set reminders in Outlook 2000, Outlook 2002 or Outlook 2003, you can use the Time Zone Data Update Tool for Microsoft Office Outlook to help you transition any existing appointment during these weeks. The tool should be used after applying the Windows update.

If you have a Pocket PC or Smartphone an update is available. This update is provided at no charge. More information is available on the Windows Mobile web site.

If you do not update your device, then your phone system clock will be off by 1 hour for 3 weeks in March and for 1 week in November in the U.S. and Canada.

Windows Mobile 6 does not need to be updated. This patch is only for previous versions of Windows Mobile (including version 5).

Mac OS X

OS 10.4.5 systems or later do not require an update.

OS 10.3.9 systems do not require an update.

Systems using previous versions of OS X will require an update. For example, if your system is operating at version 10.4.2 you will need to update to version 10.4.5 or newer. If your system is operating at version 10.3.5 you will need to update to version 10.3.9.

Microsoft Office for Mac OS X

Office 2004

An update to address the change in Daylight Saving Time was issued for Office 2004 in Update 11.3.3. This update is cumulative so you do not need to install previous updates before installing this update. Update 11.3.4 is not cumulative and requires that you have Update 11.3.3 installed prior to installation. To install Update 11.3.3 you may download the file at the following address or use the AutoUpdate utility included with Office 2004.

The Daylight Saving Time update will primarily benefit users of Entourage. However, all users should update Office 2004 regardless of whether or not they use Entourage.

Office X

As of January of 2007 Microsoft has stopped providing support for Office X and will only issue security fixes. As a result, there is not patch to correct this issue and users are encouraged to upgrade to Office 2004..
