Introduction to AI

What is AI?

Artificial Intelligence (AI) refers to the development of computer systems that can perform tasks typically requiring human intelligence, such as learning, reasoning, and self-improvement. At Troy University, AI is used to enhance learning experiences, streamline administrative tasks, and support research across various disciplines.

AI in Academics

  • Ethical Use of AI in the Classroom

    Academic Integrity

Students are expected to uphold Troy University’s standards of academic integrity, even when using AI tools. Unauthorized use of AI for assignments or presenting AI-generated content as one’s own work is considered academic misconduct.

    Transparency and Citation

If AI tools are used in academic work, it is essential to disclose this usage. Proper citation of AI tools and the outputs they generate is required to maintain transparency and academic honesty.

    AI as a Learning Tool

AI should complement, not replace, traditional learning methods. Students are encouraged to use AI to enhance their understanding but must ensure they are mastering the material independently.

  • Privacy and Data Security

    Data Handling with AI

Students and faculty must be cautious when inputting sensitive or personal information into AI tools. Only data classified as low-risk should be used with AI tools, especially if there is no vendor agreement in place to protect the data.

    Compliance with Regulations

Use of AI tools must comply with university policies, as well as state, federal, and international regulations, particularly concerning data protection laws like FERPA and GDPR.

AI in Research

  • Responsible Use of AI in Research

    Understanding AI Limitations

Researchers must be aware of the biases and inaccuracies that can arise from AI-generated data. It’s crucial to validate AI outputs using reliable sources to ensure the integrity of research findings.

    Data Privacy

Researchers must protect the privacy of research participants, especially when using AI tools in studies involving human subjects. Special considerations are required when handling data that could be re-identified.

    Authorship and AI

AI cannot be credited as an author in research publications. However, any use of AI in the creation of research content should be transparently reported, ensuring accountability and reproducibility.
